Noninvasive Quantification of Human Brain Antioxidant Concentrations via Double Edited H MRS Throughout Intravenous Delivery of Vitamin C

چکیده
Introduction Antioxidant defenses are involved in protecting against dementia and neurodegenerative disease. Vitamin C (ascorbate) and glutathione (GSH) are the two most concentrated chemical antioxidants in the human central nervous system [1]. While human brain region specific ascorbate concentration ([Asc]) changes have been measured post mortem as a function of age [2], studies in young rats suggest that brain Asc homeostasis is maintained [3] by transporters in the choroid plexus. A recent study used short TE STEAM at 3 T to report an increase in brain [Asc] induced by IV administration of Asc [4]. The goal of this project was to investigate temporal changes in brain Asc and GSH levels after IV administration of Asc using short TE STEAM and double editing with (DEW) MEGA-PRESS at 4 T.

Double Edited NMR Spectroscoy for Detection of an Antioxidant Profile in the Human Brain In Vivo
M. Terpstra, R. Gruetter University of MN, Minneapolis, MN, United States Introduction Edited spectroscopy is useful for separating overlapping resonances (1). Although co-edited resonances are often retained, the edited experiment is typically designed for resolution of a single target resonance. The goal of this study was to deliberately add a second target resonance, i.e. reduced glutathione...
متن کاملEffect of exercise training on saliva brain derived neurotrophic factor, catalase and vitamin c
Background: The balance between production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and antioxidant defense in the body has important health implications. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in salivary antioxidants: catalase, vitamin C and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), in sedentary men at rest and after acute exhaustive exercise. Methods: This randomi...
متن کاملEffect of Receiving Intravenous Vitamin C on Dyslipidemia in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis
Background: Dyslipidemia is one of the major causes of the production and progression of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients. Vitamin C is able to improve dyslipidemia by reducing an oxidative stress. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation on dyslipidemia in hemodialysis patients. Methods: In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 160 patient...
متن کاملارزیابی تاثیر محافظتی ویتامین E بر هیستولوژی و استرس اکسیداتیو مغز در موشهای صحرایی ماده القا شده با امواج موبایل
Introduction: It has been shown that mobile radiations (MRs) have detrimental effects on brain histoarchitecture and vitamin E as a powerful antioxidant can exhibit neuroprotective effects. This study was carried out to evaluate the protective effects of vitamin E against MRs-induced histological changes in rat brain. Methods: Adult female Wistar rats were randomly categorized into 4 groups (n...
متن کامل1H NMR detection of vitamin C in human brain in vivo.
Vitamin C (ascorbate) is well established as an essential nutrient that functions as an antioxidant. Since it is present in the human brain at detectable concentrations, this study was designed to detect and quantify ascorbate in the human brain in vivo using 1H NMR spectroscopy (MRS). Ascorbate was consistently detected in all five study subjects, and was measured using MEGA-PRESS difference e...
